WordPress
In plans that include WordPress we can install it for you, ready to use, with an administrator user. In the dashboard: Hosting → website name → WordPress.
Install WordPress
If you chose Hosting with WordPress when buying, the installation starts on its own. Otherwise:
- Open the WordPress tab and click Install WordPress.
- Wait a few minutes: the page updates by itself and shows the login details.
The installation needs the website's folder (www) to be empty: if it already contains files, empty it via FTP before trying again.
What we set up
The WordPress we install is ready to be fast and secure:
- object (Redis) and page cache, already on;
- WordPress scheduled tasks run every 5 minutes on the server, not on every visit;
- Rome time zone (for websites in Italian) and readable page addresses (
/post-name/); - no sample content ("Hello world!", "Sample Page"), no Hello Dolly and Akismet plugins and no unused themes;
- at most 10 revisions kept for each post, so the database doesn't grow without limit;
- the theme and plugin file editor in the dashboard is turned off: someone who steals a password can't change the website code from there.
If you need the file editor, open
wp-config.phpvia FTP and remove the linedefine( 'DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT', true );. For code changes, FTP is safer.
Sign in to the dashboard
In the WordPress box you find:
- Dashboard: the address
https://yourdomain/wp-admin; - Username: the administrator we created;
- Show password: the administrator's password. Every time you show it, it is recorded in the activity log.
After the first sign-in you can change the password in WordPress (Users → Profile). In that case the password shown in the dashboard is no longer valid: keep the new one safe.
WordPress installed by you
If you installed WordPress yourself (for example by uploading the files via FTP), the dashboard recognises it but does not have the password: use the credentials you created.
Plugins, themes and updates
The WordPress tab has three sub-tabs: Access, Plugins and Themes. They work even if you installed WordPress yourself:
- WordPress version (in Access, below the sign-in details): the installed version and, when a new one is out, Update WordPress;
- Plugins: name, version, status (active or inactive) and available update. From each plugin's ⋮ menu: Activate or Deactivate, Update, Enable auto-updates (or Disable), Delete. Update all updates every plugin at once;
- Themes: from the ⋮ menu Activate, Update, Delete.
Every action asks for confirmation and starts within a few seconds, one at a time per website. When it is done the page updates by itself: the result is shown at the top, with the WordPress error if something went wrong.
An active plugin or theme cannot be deleted: deactivate it first (or activate another theme). Before every update there is the nightly backup: if the website stops working after an update, contact support to restore it.
New plugins and themes are installed from the WordPress admin (Plugins → Add New).
The database
WordPress uses the website's database. Name, user and password are in the wp-config.php file and in the Databases tab (see Databases).
